Course description
An advanced class in automotive technologies offers instruction in all A.S.E. (Automotive Service Excellence) areas including:  introduction to on-board computers and testing, smog control testing procedures, engine overhaul and automotive technologies.  Internship opportunities may include:  auto dealerships, automotive repair or body shops, retail parts businesses, machine shops, brake and front end shops, motorcycle repair shops or specialty shops.  Employment opportunities may include automotive machinist's helper, engine specialist, auto technician apprentice, break and front end specialist, auto body/paint apprentice, collision repair, parts and inside sales, and emission control technician.
 
Important information
- High school students must request this course through the high school counseling office and enroll online.
- Instructor interviews all students prior to enrollment.
- The Automotive Technology course at Nevada Union High School is an approved program on the State of California's Eligible Training Provider List.

- Opportunities to gain hands-on experience in the transportation and energy technologies
- On-the-job training which may include experience in a variety of automotive-related business, as well as advanced training in most automotive technologies
- College credits through Sierra College and American River College
- The opportunity to participate in a state apprenticeship program
 
Instruction includes
- On-board computer and testing
- Engine overhaul and automotive machine technologies
- Transmission and front wheel drive systems
- Smog control testing procedures
- Diagnostics
- Tire, batteries and accessories sales
- ASE training in brakes, engine performance, electrical, and steering and suspension
- Resume writing and job interview techniques
 
Course requirements
ROP will provide student materials such as supplies, uniforms, equipment, and fees to high school students or they may purchase their own from our vendor(s).   Buying from our vendor(s) will guarantee the best price, quality and common materials for all of our students.
 
Adult fees
$350. (includes Registration; Lab/Materials fee; Shop Coat)
- The Automotive Technology course at Nevada Union High School is an approved program on the State of California's Eligible Training Provider List.
 
Class prerequisites
- Adults and high school juniors and seniors, with the required prerequisites, are eligible to enroll.
- Students MUST provide their own transportation to class and to the training site.
- Automotive services or previous automotive class experience is preferred or instructor's permission.

Automotive, welding, computers or electronics, math, science and English
 
Training site placements (may include)
Automotive repair, body or upholstery shops, auto parts suppliers, machine shops, brake and front end shops, motorcycle, dealership and independent shops, emission test and repair, diesel repair, and more
 
 
College articulation/community college credit
Students meeting competencies may articulate with Sierra College for up to 13 credits, American River College for 4 credits, and UTI (Universal Technical Institute).  Students should check with the community college articulation office to verify these units, as articulation credits and course offerings may be subject to change.
